Robert Z. Lawrence, Peterson Institute for International Economics
Lawrence Edwards, Cape Town University
Peterson Institute for International Economics, Washington, DC
March 19, 2013
The Peterson Institute released its latest book Rising Tide: Is Growth in Emerging Economies Good for the United States? on March 19, 2013. Authors Robert Z. Lawrence and Lawrence Edwards discussed their study and addressed the fears that economic growth in emerging markets has or could reduce US living standards, lower US wages, and increase wage inequality. Lawrence and Edwards' research finds that these concerns are vastly overblown, and are arguably more than offset by the benefits to the United States of such trade, even with respect to inequality.
Robert Z. Lawrence, who has been a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute since 2001, is the Albert L. Williams Professor of Trade and Investment at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He was appointed by President Clinton to serve as a member of his Council of Economic Advisers in 1999 and has done extensive research on trade, jobs, and globalization. Lawrence Edwards is a professor at the School of Economics, University of Cape Town, and research associate of the South African Labor and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) and Policy Research on International Services and Manufacturing (PRISM.)
