Summary

Journalist and author T. R. Reid delivered the speech "Global Lessons on Healthcare Reform: What the United States Can Learn from Other Countries," at the Peterson Institute for International Economics on November 19, 2009. The topic could not be more timely as Congress wrestles with such issues as cost control, the "public option," the value of expensive medical technologies, and healthcare rationing as part of its effort to overhaul the healthcare system.

Mr. Reid is a former domestic and foreign correspondent, and bureau chief, for the Washington Post. He has spent several years studying health care around the world, from Europe to Asia. His book, The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care, published August 2009, examines models and solutions developed overseas that could apply to the problems confronting the American healthcare system. The book seeks to dispel "many myths about healthcare choices made by other advanced countries." He was the lead correspondent for the 2008 Frontline documentary "Sick Around the World."
